The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman ( Rain Man, Tootsie ) and Anne Bancroft ( The Pumpkin Eater, 7 Women), stirred up some mixed feelings for me. The acting was superb. Performances by Dustin Hoffman have always put a smirk on my face. Also the racy plot and rebellious attitudes of the characters were very enjoyable. However, I didn’t particularly care for the slow pace and repetition of the movie. I much preferred the catchy jingle “As Time Goes By” in Casablanca than the one song, “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, that was perpetuated throughout the film, The Graduate. Now don’t get me wrong, Simon and Garfunkel are great…but in moderation. I don’t think I can ever listen to that song again thanks to The Graduate. Regardless, I still thought that cinematography was clever and unique, acting was solid, and the story was Grade A rebellious and entertaining.
